Think Like An Owner
Exploring how ambitious CEOs grow great companies
Airframe Group is a long-term oriented owner of high performing garage door services businesses.
After interviewing over 300 business owners on my podcast, Think Like an Owner, I started Airframe Group to be a long-term partner to garage door service owners who are ready for the next chapter in their lives, but know their business has a longer story to tell.
Through the podcast, I learned about the highs and lows of business operations and partnerships, and formed my own view of the kind of partner I want to be: people-first, customer-focused, and with a founder’s time horizon.
The owners I’m most excited to partner with are those who want to see their business expand the role they play in the industry and community, their employees continue to grow in their careers, and their customers to receive ever-improving service. Owners who see more than just the monetary value in their business.
Before starting Airframe, I was the Chief of Staff at HousingWire, a news organization for the housing and construction markets, which we transformed into an information services company through a key data acquisition and integration. Prior to HousingWire, I had been running my podcast full-time and founded a print publication called The Operator’s Handbook designed to share the best insights and ideas from CEOs of small companies.
The name “Airframe” is an ode to the airframe of an aircraft needing to be the strongest and longest lasting piece of the plane. It has to survive turbulence, rough landings, human error, and getting hit by ground equipment and service trucks. Engines, tires, seats, and lights all get replaced, but the airframe has to last. I want to build companies like airframes: durable, long-lasting, and capable of taking deep responsibility for the lives it supports.

Where I’m From
Growing up in Oregon, both my parents were leaders. My mom is a small-town family practice physician who owned her practice for over twenty years, and my dad was a K-8 school principal who turned around a struggling Catholic school in Portland. Our dinner conversations were about hiring new nurses and teachers, system migrations, working with parents and insurance companies, and everything else involved in running a company like yours.
My parents taught me people want to be a part of organizations that fully utilize and recognize their unique talents. Building a clinic, school, team, or company where people feel they belong and can succeed is one of the most meaningful missions one can have in life. To me, becoming a CEO represents an opportunity to live a meaningful career that improves the lives of employees, customers, vendors, and their families.
Today my wife, Michelle, and I live in Chapel Hill, NC where she is a physical therapist at Duke University. We also have two corgis, Cici and Otis, and I’ve got tons of pictures of them both.
